About Delhi Meerut RRTS
The Delhi-Meerut RRTS (Regional Rapid Transit System), also known as “Namo Bharat,” is a semi-high-speed rail corridor connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. Here’s a look at its future and benefits for Meerut:
Current Status and Future:
- Operational Sections: As of early May 2025, approximately 55 km of the 82.15 km corridor is operational, connecting Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar. Extensions up to Meerut South and Modinagar North were made operational in 2024.
- Expected Full Operation: The entire 82.15 km corridor, stretching from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut, is expected to be fully operational by June 2025.
- Meerut Metro Integration: Within Meerut city, the RRTS infrastructure will also be used for local Meerut Metro services. Eight dedicated metro-only stations are being built for this purpose: Partapur, Rithani, Brahmapuri, Meerut Central, Bhaisali, MES Colony, Daurli, and Meerut North. Extensive trial runs for the Meerut Metro are already underway.
- Extension to Haridwar (Proposed): There is a future proposal to extend the RRTS line from Meerut to Haridwar via Muzaffarnagar. If implemented, this could significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Haridwar.
- Transit-Oriented Development: The Delhi-Meerut RRTS project is promoting Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) in the region. A 750-acre township is being developed in Partapur, Meerut, with a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, seamlessly connected to the RRTS.
Benefits for Meerut:
Sustainable Mobility: By encouraging a shift from private vehicles to public transport, the RRTS will help reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in Meerut and the NCR, promoting a more sustainable environment.
Reduced Travel Time: The RRTS will drastically reduce the travel time between Meerut and Delhi to under an hour, compared to the current 2-3 hours by road.
Improved Connectivity: It will provide a fast, efficient, and comfortable mode of transport for daily commuters, enhancing connectivity with Delhi and other NCR cities.
Economic Growth: The improved connectivity is expected to boost economic activity in Meerut by enhancing access to employment hubs, education centers, and healthcare facilities in the NCR. It can also lead to the development of new commercial hubs and increase property values in the region.
Job Creation: The project has generated and will continue to generate employment opportunities during the construction and operational phases.
